The first week of August, 1964, the United States talked itself into a war using an attack that never happened.
It’s called the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, and you likely know at least a little about it. But stay with me, because the details are worse than most people realize.
Here's what really happened:
On August 2, 1964, the destroyer USS Maddox exchanged fire with North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Two nights later, on August 4, the Maddox reported a second attack. Within thirty minutes of the report, President Johnson was calling for strikes against North Vietnam. Days later, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which was basically a blank check that handed Johnson the authority to pour ground troops into Vietnam. It passed the House 416 to 0 and the Senate, 88 to 2.
There was just one problem.
The second attack never happened.
There were no North Vietnamese boats in the area that night. What the sailors "saw" were false radar echoes in bad weather, nervous sonar men mistaking the ship's own propellers for incoming torpedoes, and a crew that had been warned to expect an attack and therefore found one.
Johnson, showing his true colors, is said to have remarked: "Hell, those dumb, stupid sailors were just shooting at flying fish."
The point is, he knew the second attack didn’t happen, and he escalated anyway.
In 2005, the NSA finally declassified its own internal history of that night. It revealed that the agency's officers hadn't just made an honest mistake. They had deliberately misrepresented the intelligence to make it look like the August 4 attack was real. Cables that actually referred to the August 2 fight (the real one) were re-translated and re-dated to manufacture evidence for the second one.
The proof for the entire Vietnam war was, in significant part, totally fabricated.
The war those manufactured cables helped launch went on for more than a decade and cost over 58,000 American lives. More than a million North Vietnamese soldiers were killed, and around 200,000 South Vietnamese. Millions of civilians on both sides were simply written off as collateral damage.
All of this death and destruction was in response to an attack that simply didn’t occur.
If that seems unbelievable, it shouldn’t. The U.S. did nearly the same thing at the wind-up to the Gulf War when they paraded a young Kuwaiti girl in front of Congress to relay her first-hand account of atrocities committed by Iraqi soldiers. Her testimony was hugely impactful in turning the tide of public opinion in favor of a U.S. invasion.
Come to find out, none of what she said was true.
She was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States, and had been coached by American PR firm, Hill & Knowlton, as part of a larger effort by Kuwait’s exiled ruling families to get the U.S to enter a ground war with occupying Iraq.
There’s a reason you don’t find stories like this in textbooks. Sure, you might find "Gulf of Tonkin", and you might even read that, "the second attack is disputed," but what you are unlikely to find is the outright truth: the government fabricated evidence to start a war, and we have the declassified paperwork that proves it.
That kind of admission is problematic for government-run schools because it is likely to train children who grow up suspicious of government messaging. And the whole deck of cards for public ed is a population that isn’t suspicious of government messaging.
People who think critically when those in charge are beating the war drum and insisting there's no time to discuss or debate before moving, people who say, “wait… how do we actually know that’s true,” pose an existential threat to the powers that be.
That's why the ability to question and criticize are some of the most valuable things a young person can carry into adulthood. Basically the exact opposite of the “skills” that a system built on “sit down, trust the teacher, don’t question authority,” needs to survive.
