MLK Day: Remembering the Man, Exposing the Machine

Every January, schools and news outlets roll out the same feel-good tributes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The marches, the dream speech, the Nobel Prize—it’s pretty much just copypasta of what they’ve been doing for the last 50 years.

Of course, those pieces of King’s legacy are worth celebrating. Dr. King was a courageous voice for equality, nonviolence, and judging people by character instead of skin color. His work helped dismantle legal segregation and inspire millions to demand better.

But the full story is a lot messier than the sanitized version most of us have been fed.

Dr. King didn't just challenge racism; he challenged the powerful in ways that made him a target.

COINTELPRO was a documented operation launched in the 1950s and expanded in the '60s to "disrupt, misdirect, discredit, and otherwise neutralize" groups and individuals seen as threats to the status quo.

Declassified files show the FBI, under J. Edgar Hoover, obsessively surveilled Dr. King for years.

They wiretapped his phones and hotel rooms, planted informants, spread rumors, and even sent him an anonymous 1964 letter (with audio tapes of alleged personal indiscretions) that basically told him to step aside—or else.

The FBI’s goal wasn't just to monitor a potential threat to the status quo; it was to destroy his credibility, fracture the civil rights movement, and silence a man whose peaceful activism exposed uncomfortable truths about power and injustice.

Time has a way of bringing truth to light, and everything we now know about COINTELPRO is straight from the FBI's own vault and congressional investigations like the Church Committee.

We used these sources when we wrote a chapter on COINTELPRO in The Tuttle Twins Guide to True Conspiracies.

Since Dr. King's assassination in 1968, some pretty damning information about his personal life has surfaced. The problem is that a lot of that info came from the same agencies that were out to destroy him, so separating fact from potential smear is tricky. We may never know.

Still, it’s worth remembering that we never have to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Historical figures are human. They are flawed, complex, and often contradictory. If we discarded everyone with moral or ethical failings, we'd have very few people left to learn from. The principles Dr. King stood for—equality under the law, resisting tyranny without violence, holding power accountable—remain powerful and true; even if the messenger was flawed.

Days like today are perfect for family conversations. They make a great time to talk to your kids about what kinds of questions they should ask whenever they think about official narratives, or learn a one-sided view of a historical figure. Questions like:

What makes a leader worth emulating? How do we separate ideas from individuals? Why is it crucial to question official narratives instead of accepting them at face value?

That's exactly why we wrote the Tuttle Twins Guidebook series. We wanted to create resources for arming teens (and adults!) with tools to think critically, spot manipulation, and stand up for what's right.

Today is the last day of our MLK Weekend sale. You can get the complete 7-Guidebook Bundle for 25% off. It includes:
